About the project

Commercial production of potatoes, vegetables, and berries takes place farther north in Northern Norway than anywhere else in the world. The unique light conditions and climate make it possible to grow the potatoes we need. New sustainable potato varieties adapted to Northern Norway will have high nutrient use efficiency, strong disease resistance, robustness against mechanical damage, reduced food waste, and increased market share. Expanding food production in the north creates ripple effects for processing industries, tourism, and regional attractiveness.

NLR Nord aims to develop and test new potato varieties for the northernmost region of Norway. The goal is to identify varieties suited to the harsh northern climate using new and more efficient breeding techniques. Marker-assisted selection has reached a level that enables effective and precise selection. This increases the likelihood of identifying suitable varieties for Northern Norway’s food preparedness, reduced waste, and premium food quality
