Graminor is participating in various Research - and Development (R & D) Projects involving national and international partners. In relation to research related to the development of new varieties of cereals Graminor is involved in the following projects:

Expanding the technology base for Norwegian wheat breeding: genomic tools for breeding of high quality bread wheat.

Increasing wheat production for food is the most important element to achieve the Norwegian government goal to increase the national food production by 20% within 2030 (St. meld. no 9, 2011-2012). While wheat cultivars on the Norwegian market have the genetic potential for bread-making quality, this potential is often destroyed by pre-harvest sprouting (PHS), the untimely germination of the grain, caused by delayed harvest due to rainy weather. PHS is the single most important quality-degrading factor of wheat in Norway and other Nordic regions with similar environmental challenges. When PHS occurs, wheat is downgraded as feed, causing considerable economic losses to farmers. The Expand project aims to provide Graminor with new molecular tools and selection methods that will be implemented in the wheat breeding program, and to develop wheat cultivars with improved resistance to PHS. The four main objectives are to identify the most important genetic factors (QTL) behind PHS resistance in the Norwegian wheat breeding material, to unravel the molecular mechanisms behind the high level of seed dormancy and high PHS resistance in the breeding line T7347, to develop and validate molecular markers for the most promising genes (QTL) associated with PHS resistance, and to develop stochastic prediction models for genomic selection for PHS resistance. The anticipated results of this research will be a more profitable wheat breeding program, through faster genetic gains and a more precise selection of germplasm with improved PHS resistance and general adaptation to future climatic conditions of the target environments, and help to fulfil the goals of increased Norwegian food production based on locally adapted wheat cultivars with stable bread-making quality.
